Joseph's story
“Completely out of the blue I suffered a heart attack at the age of 24. I feel as though I have been given a second chance”
At the age of just 24, Joseph suffered what most young, fit, healthy people think will never happen to them; a heart attack, resulting in three weeks in the coronary care unit at Royal Preston Hospital, Lancashire.
“Before my heart attack I had no indication of any health problems at all; in fact I had represented my Regiment in running and orienteering and did ultra distance running and all sorts of sports including mountaineering, white water kayaking and skiing”
Following the attack, doctors noticed lumps on Joseph’s knuckles, elbows and knees. These were all cholesterol deposits, a tell-tale sign of FH which Joseph had surgically removed only six months prior to the heart attack.
