Cholesterol Now is a campaign to give healthcare professionals tools and information on cholesterol management to support patients in taking control of their cardiovascular health

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of premature mortality in England, causing a quarter of all deaths in the UK (1). Improving the treatment of high-risk conditions, such as high cholesterol, is a vital part of CVD prevention. As set out in the NHS Long Term Plan - CVD is the single biggest area where the NHS can save lives over the next 10 years

High cholesterol is a risk to health and well-being

  • About 220,000 people in the UK have familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), of whom less than 8% are currently identified (2)
  • 7.1% of deaths in England are caused each year by high cholesterol (3)
  • There are over 100,000 hospital admissions in the UK each year due to heart attacks – that’s 1 every 5 minutes (4)
  • Research has shown that a 1-mmol/L reduction in LDL-C reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events by 23% (5)
