Dr Peter Green - Chair
Dr. Green has been a GP in Kent for over 30 years. He has always been interested in quality of care and systems that can be developed to support this. It’s this desire to make things easier for clinicians and better for patients that led him into his work on Familial Hypercholesterolaemia. He demonstrated that it is possible to systematically identify patients with Familial Hypercholesterolaemia in Primary Care.
This led to his involvement both with HEART UK and with the NHS and PHE in the development of a national CVDPrevent audit for primary care.
He sees primary care as key to the identification of patients at risk of FH and other lipid disorders.
As well as being a GP he is also currently a GP Governing Body member of Kent and Medway Clinical Commissioning Group. Having previously held roles as Chief Clinical Officer then Chair of Medway CCG, Executive and Medical Director roles in Primary Care trusts and also roles in training GPs.
Dr Alan Rees – Medical Director
Dr. Alan Rees is a retired Consultant Physician who was based at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff with a special interest in diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism.
He is a joint author of the Joint British Guidelines for the Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease, section editor of Current Opinion in Lipidology and member of the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Diabetes and Vascular Disease and was previous Chair of the Royal Society of Medicine Lipid Section. Dr. Rees has published over 130 peer reviewed papers in the field of diabetes and the dyslipidaemias and has a long standing interest in the molecular genetics of atherosclerosis and the dyslipidaemias.
He is previous Secretary of the British Hyperlipidaemia Association, which joined to form HEART UK.
Neil Phipps – Treasurer
Neil is a recently retired Chartered Accountant (training with KPMG in London) as well as having a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from the University of Bristol.
Neil brings to HEART UK his extensive international expertise in finance, strategy, business partnering and sales, gained in the medical and technology sectors. Neil has experience in implementing best business practices as part of continuous business process improvement programmes and is passionate about producing insightful and actionable reporting.
Neil also volunteers as a general advisor for the Citizens Advice Bureau.”
Joanne Bennett
Joanne is responsible for the full range of legal services across Hitachi Consulting’s EMEA operations, including corporate, commercial, employment, legal aspects of delivery QA, and IP matters. Joanne is a qualified Data Privacy Practitioner and the Executive Lead for Hitachi Consulting's global GDPR Programme, for which Hitachi Consulting has become the first global brand to achieve compliance with the BS 10012:2017 Data Protection Standard for its personal information management system (PIMS). Joanne also has responsibility for Hitachi Consulting's global compliance programme. Joanne is a member of Hitachi Consulting's EMEA Management Team, reports to the Chief Legal Counsel in the US and has management responsibility for two lawyers and a paralegal.
Steve Boley
Steve is an independent consultant working with the Møller Centre to deliver world class development programmes.
He has a background of helping high performing business people lead, engage and motivate their teams. He worked for many years with PwC both as an accountant and then running leadership and career development programmes for the Partners and Senior Directors.
Before his election to the chair of HEART UK, Steve was treasurer of the charity for seven years.
Steve is passionate about helping individuals have more fun and manage their lives more effectively by way of unleashing productivity and creativity at work.
Dr Dev Datta
Dr. Datta is clinical lead for the lipoprotein apheresis service in Cardiff and is medical lead for FH Wales, the Welsh Familial Hypercholesterolaemia cascade testing service. He runs a clinical nutrition service addressing medical complications of eating disorders and is clinical lead for the specialist weight management service in Cardiff. His research interests are in FH and vascular biology. Dr Datta is Course Director for the distance learning MSc in Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine at University of South Wales.
Thomas Dixon
Tom has over 14 years experience in the charity sector and has worked in a number of different cause areas growing income through different fundraising streams. Tom brings his leadership skills to the charity, in addition to his expertise in building highly successful teams, leading change, relationships fundraising, budget management, project management and income generation.
Bryan Dobson
Bryan chairs the HEART UK Patient and Supporter Committee, which oversees the Ambassador Programme and many advocacy activities, such as the FH Day of Action. Bryan also appears in a promotional video raising awareness of living with FH which appeared in cinemas and has run and cycled in HEART UK fundraising events.
Andrew Greaves
Andrew has worked across the NHS and commercial sector and now has a senior role with a leading international manufacturer. Andrew has a long supportive relationship with HEART UK and brings his commercial knowledge and expertise to the charity.
Prof Liz Hughes
Professor Elizabeth Hughes is Regional Dean and Director of education and Quality for Health Education (London and South East). In this role she is responsible for the training of junior doctors, dentists, and non-medical healthcare professionals throughout the London and South East region.
She is director of the Sandwell Medical Research Unit, a leading UK centre for research into diabetes and heart disease particularly focusing on research on cardiovascular risk in the South Asian Community on which she has published widely.
Prof Hughes was formerly treasurer of both the Family Heart and British Hyperlipidaemia Associations and then Chairman of the FHA before both organisations merged to become HEART UK. She has worked extensively with patient partnerships
Tricia Kennerley
Tricia is an experienced pharmacist with a passion for developing the role of the pharmacist into a healthcare services provider and public health expert. She has experience of working at national and international level as well as excellent knowledge of healthcare policy development within pharmacy, Government, NHS professional body and pharmaceutical industry level. She has great insight and influence in health policy along with experience with working at all levels of Government to influence the development of innovative pharmacy and healthcare services.
Tricia is a senior Executive of a multinational organisation.
Dr Dermot Neely
Consultant in Clinical Biochemistry and Metabolic Medicine and Director of the Newcastle Supra-Regional Assay Services for Hormones and Cardiovascular Biomarkers, Lead Consultant for the Lipid and Metabolic Clinic, Royal Victoria Infirmary and Founder of the Lipid Specialists Advisory Group for the Regional Cardiovascular Network. An expert adviser on the NICE Lipid Modification Guidelines in 2008 (CG67) and member of the Guideline Development Group for the CG181 guideline in 2012-14. Standing Member of the NICE Diagnostics Advisory Committee 2014- present. His research interests are in cardiovascular biomarkers, inherited lipid disorders and clinical trials of novel lipid lowering therapies.
Dr. Neely is a founder Trustee of the HEART UK.
Alison Pottle
Alison is a Consultant Nurse in Cardiology at the world famous Harefield Hospital in Middlesex. Alison has published extensively in medical, nursing and other journals and continues her research and direct patient contact, leading at the apheresis unit. Alison is a member of HEART UK’s Healthcare Committee in addition to chairing HEART UK’s Lipid Interest Group.
Nicole Kim
I have been a dynamic, innovative and growth orientated business development and commercial sales director with extensive experience and a global network across top financial services and emerging regulatory technology companies over 12 years. I have degrees in Linguistics and Cognitive Science & Natural Language and have great appreciation for technological advancement in Financial Services and Healthcare.
I am an advocate of art, culture and charity work and a proactive supporter of numerous charities across the U.K. Living between the South Coast and London with my partner and two dogs I enjoy the balance of city life and beach walks.
Dr Handrean Soran
Dr Handrean Soran is Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist & Honorary Senior Lecturer at Manchester University Trust. He has a specialist interest in lipidology, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular risk, parathyroid, calcium and bone metabolism. He provides a tertiary centre service for lipoprotein disorders, as well as calcium and metabolic bone diseases. His research work is mainly focused on cardiovascular risk, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) quality, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) functionality, micro- and macro-vascular complications of diabetes & obesity and the effect of metabolic surgery induced weight loss as well as pharmacological agents on these complications. Dr Soran is on the editorial board of Atherosclerosis Journal. Dr Soran authored more than 140 peer reviewed publications and a number of book chapters.
Dr Soran leads cardiovascular and trials team and Lipid Research group at Manchester University NHS Trust and Lipoprotein Research Group at University of Manchester. He acted as the UK chief investigator for more than 15 multicentre clinical trials and principal investigator for more than 25 multicentre clinical trials and studies. He also acted as a member of the steering committee of many large multinational randomised control trials.
He successfully supervised many MD and PhD students and currently has one MD and four PhD students. Dr Soran Leads Manchester Endocrinology and Diabetes Specialty Certificate Examination (SCE) course which attracts many national and international delegates. He also organises annual UK Lipid Forum and North West Endocrinology and Atherosclerosis update symposiums. Each of these annual symposiums attracts 120-150 delegates across United Kingdom.
Dr Soran is the Chair of HEART UK’s medical, scientific and research committee, co-chair of the National Familial Hypercholesterolemia task force in UK and a member of UK lipoprotein apheresis committee. He also served as President of the Lipid and Vascular Section of the Royal Society of Medicine and remains a member of the section’s council.
